Celebrating the Achievements of Our OCT - NOV 2023 Cohort (Cohort 1)

Do you know the difference between a true Bitcoiner and a speculative one?

A quick Google search will tell you that a true Bitcoiner is committed to the long-term value and principles of Bitcoin, while a speculative one focuses on short-term trading opportunities.

But our cohort  one graduates (True Bitcoiners), they’ll tell you that there’s more to it. Their “passion” for Bitcoin extends beyond price fluctuations and market trends. In other words, they view Bitcoin as a revolutionary force, a decentralized currency challenging traditional financial systems. They had never used bitcoin wallets but now they send and receive bitcoin using wallets like Blink and Machankura. Oh, they catch up so quickly.

This particular cohort came in as curious newcomers. Our founder, Felix Mukungu, went to great lengths to educate them about Bitcoin because that’s what true Bitcoiners do. He collaborated with other true Bitcoiners and Mi Primer Bitcoin to offer a Bitcoin Diploma Course, ensuring that the students gained a deeper understanding of Bitcoin technology, principles, and potential. By doing so, The Core aimed to empower individuals with the knowledge needed to navigate the Bitcoin space effectively and make informed decisions about their involvement with Bitcoin.

To me, it’s even more impactful because it represents a commitment to financial literacy and inclusion. That’s why, in this article, I’ll be taking you through the experiences that shaped our first cohort’s understanding and appreciation of Bitcoin. Together, we’ll explore the vibrant discussions, the student evaluation process, and the inspiring guest lectures that made this journey unforgettable.

Our first cohort’s journey began not just with a simple Google Form, but with a promise of discovery and growth. Out of the 63 curious learners who registered, 30 of them took the next step to join our dedicated Google Classroom set up by Mi Primer Bitcoin. And this is what marked the start of an exciting adventure in Bitcoin education.

The cohort was fortunate to be under the tutelage of three talented educators:

  • Glenn Jooste, the visionary founder of Bitcoin Ubuntu from South Africa,
  • Felix Mukungu, the innovative founder of The Core from Kenya,
  • Jeph Mukiza, the inspiring catalyst, Machankura from Uganda.

The Journey Begins On October 1, 2023…

On October 9, We Hosted our First Bitcoin Class Session.

The session provided a comprehensive course overview of the Bitcoin Diploma. I remember attending this class. It was led by Felix Mukungu and Angella Wafwoyo. The curriculum was designed to challenge and inspire, with assignments posted after chapters 1-3 and 4–7, culminating in a final test that encapsulated the entire course.

Guest Speakers

For the special appearances, our cohort 1 was graced by the presence of two esteemed guest speakers.

  • Alex Gladstein from the Human Rights Foundation, who enlightened us on the intersection of Bitcoin and human rights,
  • And Jesse, the founder of HashrateUp, who delved into the nuances of Bitcoin mining and its environmental implications.

Their insights added invaluable depth to our understanding of Bitcoin’s global impact.

We Celebrated Our Graduation on December 7, 2023

Honestly, this was the highlight of our journey, and we celebrated it in active Twitter Space.

We proudly celebrated the graduation of 16 students from diverse backgrounds: 9 from Kenya, 3 from Tanzania, and one each from Uganda, the UK, India, and Canada. The ceremony featured six influential speakers from around the world, including:

Who shared their experiences and wisdom with our graduates.

Making an Impact: Success Stories

Post-graduation, our alumni have ventured into the Bitcoin ecosystem, contributing to startups and pursuing their missions. Notable alumni include:

  1. Gaylord J. Ndong’a from Kenya. Actually, this is me. I am the one writing this article. I am applying my expertise in communication, blogging, and social media management  to elevate the brand’s presence online, engage with a global audience, and drive forward the conversation about the transformative potential of Bitcoin. Thanks to The Core Team and its founder, Felix Mukungu, for giving me this golden opportunity.
  2. Pallab JD Goswami from India. He graduated in Cohort 1 and started his own mission with Bitcoin education. He also helped co-found the platform Xonghoti, which focuses on Bitcoin education in Assamese language. The platform also got the opportunity to be voted into Mi Primer Bitcoin Light Node Network.
  3. Christopher Mwaniki, a student Pursuing Computer Science in Kenya. He graduated from the first cohort and joined The Core team as the
Tech guy. He’s literally in charge of all technical support.

Now, as we reflect on the journey of our OCT – NOV 2023 Cohort, it’s clear that their achievements are not just a testament to their dedication but also to the vision of The Core and its founder, Felix Mukungu. The graduates, true Bitcoiners at heart, have really embraced Bitcoin as a transformative force capable of challenging and reshaping the financial landscape.
